Tips for shooting at summer festivals

Summer’s here, and that means lots of opportunities for great photos: music festivals, parades, carnivals and street fests are all on the way! It can be hard to capture all of that fun on camera when there’s so much excitement. Follow these tips when you’re trying to shoot those timeless summer moments.

1. Capture smiles

Festivals are great for people-watching. See someone interesting you’d like to shoot? Most festival-goers are happy to have their photo taken—just ask! Or, if you like the natural emotions of the crowd, there’s no shame in taking a bunch of candid photos—sometimes raw emotion can be more powerful than posed smiles.

2. Keep it movin’

Tripods keep the camera steady, which is ideal when you’re trying to shoot movement—but tripods and SLR cameras aren’t very festival-friendly. Instead, bring a smartphone and keep it as steady as possible. Experiment with the best angle for shots: sometimes shooting above your head or at your chest produces great results.

3. Get up close and personal

Going to a parade or arts festival? Make sure to get up close and personal with performers. Bright colors, outrageous costumes and synchronized dancers are all a part of the fun, but photos aren’t as powerful with a bunch of spectators in the shot.

4. Enjoy the day

Once you’ve captured enough photos, don’t forget to put the phone away and have a little fun yourself!
