New York Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2021 looks a little different this September, with designers showing to small crowds and Zoom applauses. Still, this event’s mad influence on both fashion and beauty remain unmistakable—and now with even bigger viewership. This season’s beauty shies away from the masterly applied runway-only looks and appeals to a quicker (and safer) application of makeup that we real-lifers can easily wear, with a focus on natural-ish skin, classic bold lips, and subtle washes of warmth along the eyes.
Look 1: Faux freckles
“You always want what you don’t have” is commonly heard in the beauty biz, and freckles are no exception. Jason Wu brightly beamed sun-speckled skin on models, done all the while with a flick of makeup. Tip: Recreate this look with any warm brown, ideally waterproof, creamy makeup—this includes lipstick—by pressing onto finished skin in an asymmetrical pattern.
Look 2: Bold lips
Masks have been hiding one of beauty’s most glamorous looks: the bold lip. Still, designers took liberties in reviving its reign while Rodarte boasts the hues of burgundy and brown (balanced with big, black lashes), while Tom Ford bursts with glossy hot pink (paired with lavender lids). Tip: If ever the chance to bust out a lip, copy the runway and skip the liner.
Look 3: Warm-toned eyes
Red-toned eye makeup makes for a daring look, where subtly is key for pulling it off. Cinq à Sept adorned models with warm washes of peach shadow, while Batsheva tastefully sported a soft yet thick fushia liner—both paired with a minimal, natural face. Tip: Less is more. Be strategic with this accent since red-around-the-eyes is stage makeup’s trick for sick.
